Smart Energy and Electric Mobility
We develop technologies for clean energy systems, smart grids, and electric mobility, including charging infrastructure and energy management systems.
Makerere University
Engineering Smart Systems for Africa
The Integrated Smart Systems Group (ISSG) at Makerere University develops engineering solutions that combine hardware and software to address critical challenges in Africa.
The group focuses on designing and deploying smart systems in energy, environment, agriculture, and infrastructure. ISSG brings together expertise in electronics, communication systems, data analytics, and system design to build practical, scalable technologies suited to resource-constrained environments.
Our work goes beyond theory. We design, prototype, and test systems in real-world settings, working closely with industry, government, and communities.
To develop integrated smart systems that solve real-world challenges through engineering innovation.
To become a leading African hub for smart systems innovation and technological impact.
We develop technologies for clean energy systems, smart grids, and electric mobility, including charging infrastructure and energy management systems.
We design sensor networks and data platforms for monitoring air quality, climate, and environmental conditions to support policy and urban planning.
We build IoT-based systems that support precision agriculture, irrigation management, and climate-resilient farming.
ISSG develops technologies that contribute to:
Our goal is to translate engineering research into solutions that improve lives and support sustainable development.
Design and deployment of energy-efficient EV charging and battery swapping systems for African cities.
Development of low-cost sensor networks for air quality and climate monitoring.
IoT-based sensing and decision systems to support smallholder farmers and improve agricultural productivity.
We collaborate with:
These partnerships enable us to move from research to real-world deployment.
We welcome collaboration with researchers, industry partners, and students interested in smart systems and sustainable technologies.
